Chewton Glen is set in one of the most fascinating areas of Britain. Located on the border of Hampshire and Dorset, the picturesque landscape of the New Forest, William the Conqueror's royal hunting ground, is on the hotel's doorstep. From sailing a super yacht from the smugglers' port of Lymington across the Solent to Yarmouth, to boarding a 4 x 4 and venturing deep into the heart of mysterious heathland and forest which has just been designated a National Park. You can take a helicopter flight for a bird's eye view of the dramatic Dorset Heritage coastline, or enjoy a day with a rod on that Holy Grail of fishing, the River Test. Golf, tennis and croquet clinics can be arranged on Chewton Glen's own course, courts and lawn, and the hotel's 130 acres of woodland, gardens and parkland offer a perfect setting for a myriad of activities. From traditional country pursuits to high-powered events, almost anything is possible.
Chewton Glen is surrounded by places of historic importance and scenic beauty. The majesty of Salisbury Cathedral, the mystery of Stonehenge, the homes of Queen Victoria, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and Lawrence of Arabia are few of many places of interest are within reach of Chewton Glen.
The New Forest is a unique area of historical, ecological and agricultural beauty. The inhabitants of the forest, known as 'Commoners', have the right to pasture their ponies, cattle, pigs and donkeys in the open forestland so be very careful as you drive! It is an outstanding recreational area for walking and riding. The New Forest is full of the most beautiful woodland scenery. The best walks are to be found by taking the car into the forest, parking in one of the many designated parking sites, and then walking into the heart of the forest. Another way to see the New Forest is on horseback. There are a number of local stables, and riding can be arranged for all standards.
The Solent is the channel of water between the Isle of Wight and the Hampshire coast. There are many ways to enjoy the Solent. If you are a yachtsman you will need no introduction to the opportunities it provides for sailing.
